This college level course examines cultural and language development factors that impact the achievement of students learning English as a new language. Participants will explore research-based pedagogical practices to support the design of content-area instruction that meets the needs of English language learners. Participants will gain various tools and techniques to foster academic achievement for ELLs at varying levels of language and literacy development.
Participants will use the 4 domains of language - reading, writing, speaking, and listening - to engage in meaningful learning experiences that promote the 4C's of 21st Century learning: 6communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. In addition, these experiences will cultivate an understanding of differentiated methodologies in order to facilitate the creation of performance-based assessment tools and tasks designed to meet the needs of diverse learners. Participants will learn to recognize and honor the idea that the progress of each student's learning should be nurtured over time in an atmosphere that preserves student culture and identity while encouraging and supporting student efforts at creating meaning.
Note: Participants who complete the course will receive 45 hours of CTLE credit through the LearnUFT program. To receive A+ and/or P credit for the course, you must also register on the DOE's ASPDP website (https://pci.nycenet.edu/aspdp/Account/Login)
Participants also have the opportunity to register to access 3 graduate level credit recommendations through the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS). http://www.nationalccrs.org/organizations/united-federation-teachers#n8968 There is an additional $200 fee for this option. Those selecting this option must also obtain the required text, Gottlieb, M. (2016). Assessing English language learners: Bridges to educational equity: Connecting academic language proficiency to student achievement. Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin Press (2nd edition). This course has been approved by the State Education Department to fulfill 3 semester hours of the "Methods of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages" requirement for ESOL certification in New York State. Please note that if you wish to use credit recommendations towards any other certifications within or outside of New York State, you are responsible for confirming recognition of this course towards any requirements. You may receive a refund if you withdraw from the course and submit a written request for a refund within one week prior to the registration deadline. If you enroll in a course and withdraw less than one week prior to the registration deadline, you will not be eligible for a refund. The UFT cannot accommodate course transfers to future semesters.
