Participants will explore research-based pedagogical practices to support the design of content-area instruction that meets the needs of English language learners. Participants will gain various tools and techniques to foster academic achievement for ELLs at varying levels of language and literacy development.
Teachers will use the 4 domains of language; reading, writing, speaking, and listening, to engage in meaningful learning experiences that promote the 4C's of 21st Century learning: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. In addition, these experiences will cultivate an understanding of differentiated methodologies in order to facilitate the creation of performance-based assessment tools and tasks designed to meet the needs of diverse learners. Participants will learn to recognize and honor the idea that the progress of each student's learning should be nurtured over time in an atmosphere that preserves student culture and identity while encouraging and supporting student efforts at creating meaning.
